it began as a mystery
what a wondrous journey you made
when you traveled
through the veil of birth
and now, all your days
playing in the material world
are they not enigmatic?
will you not, like all, move
through the veil of death?
which is another natural mystery
to welcome these marvels
surrounding you now
to be present and engaged
sensing the living mystery
this is the invitation
wide open
walk your path
earnestly
without striving
trusting
even when uncertain
remembering
you can’t get there alone
surrendering
into grace
after all your seeking,
your studies and travels
to find the truth
somewhere
out there on the wind
from wise lips, or in sacred texts
when you have exhausted yourself
and have used up all
that needed to be used up
yet still there is the urge to try
to answer the call
that brought you here
one road remains
that is walked inward
shedding all you thought you knew,
welcoming the unimagined
you are warm
your skin, your breath,
your beating heart
all tell the story of Life
of being connected
to great and vital forces
through it all
this is always so
you are
in its presence
pause and sense
the always near
we experience life
in human form, in a body
where matter and spirit
braid together
and it can be quite confusing
finding balance
between our worldly life
and our spiritual pursuits
not favoring one over the other
but to hold both
with equal endearment
in our physical daily life
we need sound, skillful ways
to live harmoniously
equally we need to give time
to the spirit of stillness
letting go
into the Loving Mystery
life lives
through you and me
and through the whole dazzling show
of innumerable forms
in all heartbeats,
in the spring flowers and galaxies
the pulse of life moves
give up
trying to improve upon it
fuss less
trust a little more
in the rhythms
we all belong
to this Great Dance
flowing and yielding
the small spring creek
has carved a smooth
path into rock
softness
meeting hardness
gentle strength
melting obstacles
i wonder, does it only
hold true for water and rocks?

how do we connect
life to life?
we have so much
in common
experiencing
an earthly existence
of body and spirit
braided together
may our meetings
be fresh and fizzy
witnessing in each other
life in its countless forms
briefly making an appearance
in the Great Theater
playing
it’s all about joy
full throttle
getting muddy
just to keep joy
bouncing between us
glad to be losing
seriousness
even old legs still move
at the speed of laughter
while we play
the game of life
mud-spattered, contented
until bedtime
“… of the heart”
by what grace do we live?
by what grace do we thrive?
in the blink of an eye
life changes
we are called to
adapt to a new normal
each experience giving us
another opportunity to grow
the mystery of grace remains
not to be solved
but to be companioned
“celebrate, marvel and trust”
can we
celebrate life together
with the spring wind in the air
can we
pluck wonder from the cosmos
marveling, shoulder to shoulder, drunk on life
can we
trust in our inherent goodness
as sisters and brothers
can we
share discovered beauty
like offerings of juicy fruit
to each others soft lips
we can
“humming”
life is so much more than politics, religion, science, our current understandings and cultural conformities.
life is vast
reaching, all the way
from the small, to the tiny, to the 'barely there' matters of charged particles
to the huge, unimaginably large expanses of space surrounding
our sweet home planet.
it connects the aspen trees to the stars,
the baboons to the kingdom of mushrooms
and we, you and me, are part of it
we are included
in this vast living web of life.
it pulses through us,
connecting us
to all there is, was and will ever be
we are part of the Great Harmonies
connected to the humming
. . . humming . . .

it is eager to be with us.

right now
mustangs roam the open wild
and fruit bats rest in mango trees
vultures soar on thermals high
and cave shrimp do what cave shrimp do
right now
rivers roll with snowmelt to the sea
and dust whirls up around the steps of pachyderms
lightning crackles on the plains
and polar ice sighs in the night
right now
dreams stir sleepers with their imagery
and love is lost and found and made anew
inspiration knocks on doors to find a home
in this great flux and thriving,
the Beautiful Mystery lives on!
