when you try
to come back home
through prayer, contemplation,
dancing, meditation …
whatever your current path
of alignment
offer no resistance,
don’t mind what you’ll find
make your approach as soft,
as open as the heart allows
try with ease,
evermore ease
what do you see
look at the world
what do you see?
through the lenses
that color all you perceive
clarity
is not found easily
at first all we see
is the world
then we notice
our filters, our conditioning
next the question may arise:
what does the seeing?
yet throughout it all
the dishes still
get cleaned
with this breath
one conscious breath
can bring you home
even if there have been
long times of forgetting
you can try again
without shame, or worry
to begin fresh
is possible, right now
with this mindful
breath
attention
where will my attention
roam today?
it can move fast and far,
lingering with anything
that holds its temporary fancy
drawn to this, then that,
getting entangled along the way
and yet its very movements
are illuminating
a simple, though trying practice
the witnessing of my attention
may it become
part of the way
the little animal
find that little animal within you
that thrives
on any sort of drama
and take it out to lunch
then, when you sit together
listen respectfully
to all it has to say
you don’t have to do anything
you don’t have to agree
or argue, just listen
and when all the talking
and good listening is done
invite everyone to play
playing
for the sake of playing
for the love of being alive
a simple pause
it is not easy
to pause
there is so much
restless energy,
so much mind-momentum
pulling and pushing the body
without adding any extra stimuli
try just sitting, patiently
being still
observing what arises
pausing, relaxing
coming home to self
longing for peace
this longing for peace
deep from within
it calls us
to live in harmony
with our family of
all living beings
to touch the world
with words and acts of peace
to even argue
peacefully, skillfully
without expectations
to be the light of peace
wherever we go
six little words
what do i know for certain?
with six little words
a journey begins
daily keep asking:
what do i know for certain?
not minding repetition,
boredom, uncertainty
not minding
anything
meeting yourself
where you are
what do i know for certain?
uncage the mind
and the heart blooms
little grudges
on a fine day,
while i was unaware,
it arrived, a little grudge
and it just would not let go
of it’s peevishness
now, like all “little grudges”
this one was not choosy
any topic, anytime, anywhere
would do for it to flare
in discontent
directing ire at loved ones
or world events alike
so what to do with such a “little grudge”
as a traveling companion through life?
best to get to know it well
watching it in the bright light of awareness
as it moves and what it causes inside the body,
the emotions and the world of thought
respecting it,
yet not letting it assume the driver’s seat
one third of your life
suspended…
back up
oh, still a little further back
from what has become familiar
and enter the land of wonder
each night, getting cozy in bed
sleep will arrive
for hours you are suspended
moving through dreamless
and dreaming realms
one third of your life
is being lived in the world of sleep
may wonder reawaken
when contemplating this mystery
puppy mind
each day
insights and joys
reveal themselves
in quiet, curious moments
i marvel while watching a puppy
how swiftly his attention flits
from here, to there, to everywhere
how much it resembles our mind
the wandering thoughts, in constant motion
chasing flotsam and jetsam
we have much in common, puppy and mind
both thrive with loving, dedicated attention
how sweet it is to learn
when forgiveness comes with our next breath
and praise is generously given
oh, may we be kind
to puppies and our puppy minds
a most excellent adventure
sailing with the tide
ready for the wind
casting our net
into the infinite ocean
of loving-presence
aware of the flow
of giving and receiving
of our indivisible
interconnectedness
melting the differences
our endlessly fearful
minds dream up
here we are
learning to love again
on a most excellent adventure!
nothing to hold on to
watch the waves of change
land upon your shore
flowing right through you
with their irrepressible energy
here now, but never for long
this constant feast of coming and going
there is nothing to hold on to
but this moment
which comes to you so fresh,
and full of possibility
simply resting
when my fearful heart
and agitated mind
need soothing
when my tired body
needs healing
pausing hands and feet,
mouth and eyes
simply
resting
a quiet pause
is powerful medicine
relationship mirrors
we get to know ourselves in relationships
feel our still sharp edges
reach the limits of our skill
if lucky we get so humbled
that we rediscover humor
and hang out
in the serene state of not minding
then when we grow warmth
what sweetness it brings to the land
i ask myself...
“ … for the love and beauty of the game”
on this brand new day
i ask myself to remember
to go slow
oh, even slower
to pause
often
and listen to life
with my whole body
to respond from
my true values
and observe the birth and death
of my thoughts - closely
i ask myself to remember
to know the internal landscape
as well as i know my own home
and care for them both
with tenderness
to laugh and play
with self-abandonment
for the love and beauty
of the Game
pausing and reconnecting
“without aim”
by the river
i pause without aim
and find pieces of myself
i did not even know
were missing
seven little words
“enter here”
a wise man used to tell me:
“alter your stride and meet a stranger”
at first i though:
what an odd statement
and soon forgot
but he kept repeating
these seven little words:
“alter your stride and meet a stranger”
taking the quote quite literally
i played
with “the ministry of silly walks”
and to my surprise,
in sidestepping the known
a gate opened
and dawn arrived
would i have believed,
upon first hearing these seven little words
that they were the keys to my freedom?
intentions
“slumbering”
may i become aware
of intentions
slumbering
and already circulating
through my life
seeing the power
of their persuasions
intentions,
the seeds of my future deeds,
may they bring peace
and not a life of exhaustion,
running on an ever spinning
hamster wheel
you and i
at low tide a young girl collects sea creatures on Zanzibar
we have so much in common
you and i
no matter when we were born
where we were born
we live under the same radiant sun
the shapeshifting moon
you and i supported by sacred earth
equally cleansed and refreshed by cool water
while air fills our lungs
no matter what color our feet are
how wonderful that earth,
air, water and fire are colorblind!
the very young still seem to know this
the old, having one foot in the grave
often remember it too…
that there is so much common ground
as we travel on this graced path
called: a human life
connected to the infinite
